2 Months Laterâ¦
Damion crouched in the shadow of the house he was positioned next to, a laptop balanced precariously on his knees. His finger came up to the earpiece nestled snugly inside his ear. He gave it a gentle tap. âOnsite takeover in progress,â his soft voice noted. He glanced behind him, the weeds around him brushing his beanie as he shifted on the balls of his feet.
âYep, Iâm getting all sorts of goodies on my end,â came a soft female reply. Damion couldnât stop the smile that touched his face as she continued. âThis program your friend created is top-notch.â
âHe called it the Black Widow.â Damion rolled his eyes as he typed. âIâm trying not to see the irony here.â
âAh.â Amusement rang clear in Falconâs voice. âThe power of perception.â It was clear she was typing on her end, and he wondered briefly where sheâd set up. It was just the two of them out here in the middle of nowhere. Heâd contacted her after Montoya helped him get his ankle monitor off two months ago. He wasnât sure how sheâd escaped protective custody, but sheâd met him at one of the safehouses heâd refused to give up, no questions asked. Theyâd fallen back into their easy partnership quickly, her taking what heâd give her, and producing more information out of it.
Austin was still missing, but it was only a matter of time before they found him. He only hoped that Austin was still himself when they did. He had no doubt the teen was alive. From what Falcon had been able to gather, the Wolf spared no expense to keep his hackers for as long as possible, and Austin was a special case. Heâd use the kid to his advantage, dangling him over Eli in every way he could.
Damion hadnât spoken to Eli much in the last two months, but he felt the overwhelming guilt of his failure. He needed to find Austin, and he needed to do it soon. The kid was in far more danger now than heâd been two months ago.
He and Falcon had seen the rise in violence steadily escalate since the REMbotâs early existence. He couldnât get Montoya out of his head about how wide the Wolfâs influence already was. She and Henderson had to have their hands full. He knew she was doing everything she could to support him, even though heâd broken his probation. If Sheamus ever found out how sheâd helped him, sheâd be thrown into jail herself. Damion wondered, every once in awhile, if Montoya could convince Sheamus that his need to go undercover, however rogue, was justified. He wasnât sure that Sheamus would ever understand, not completely.
The man was a good director, but he was oblivious to a majority of what was taking place around him. Most everyone was. Damion was convinced it took knowing the Wolf personally to see him for what he really was. He was the type of person that you didnât forget once you saw the truth of him.
